Silvia Martini

Electronic electrical engineering

Power system research and development center of interns

Silvia from Italy, who is currently studying in the university of Glasgow. She is studying a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
Silvia in electric power systems research and development center of Osaka factory internship for 10 weeks.

Why did you choose in sumitomo electrical engineering practice?
I decided to sumitomo electrical engineering practice is based on two main considerations.First of all, sumitomo electric is the world-famous company, its products cover a wide range of engineering fields.I think that in sumitomo electrical work will make me understand electrical and electronics engineering graduates can be engaged in the type of work as well as the type of the skills required to work.Second, since is associated with the smart grid, this internship opportunity is very attractive.Because I plan to in the smart grid field of work in the future, so I think it's going to be a great opportunity to develop useful skills.Besides these two factors, during the internship can visit to Japan is also a plus.

What did you learn from this practice is the most interesting thing?
In terms of technology, I learned in the internship of electricity market is the most interesting thing how it works, and how to use data related to electric power market and intelligent management system. In particular, I learned how to development of data mining in MATLAB software, and some knowledge of machine learning.

SEI interns is a typical working day?
Since morning power system research and development department intern in SEI.Work begins at 8:30 in the morning, to the end of the 5:15 PM, lunch time from 12:00 noon to 1:00.While at work, I mainly engaged in the work independently - writing code or do research.I and other members of the team every week two to three times meeting, to determine my work goals or discuss problems together. However, when I have any questions or problems, I can seek help from tutors and teammates. After work, I usually go to the gym, relaxing at home after supper.

Practice to shape your career if you have any help?
Practice helps me to develop technical and soft skills, which is very useful to my future career. Also let me have a thorough understanding of the Japanese company organization and career prospects in Japan. Most importantly, it makes me understand what skills are needed for the smart grid and electric power system engineers. This has caused me to redefine my last year in the university will focus on the topic.

In the future you plan to attend the internship students have any Suggestions?
As the independent work involves a lot of practice, so in you have difficulty understand job requirements or practice the end goal, it is important to stay positive and don't lose heart.Talking with colleagues will help, but need to keep an open attitude, because compared with other countries/regions, Japan's work communication is different. Finally, for personnel engaged in research and development work, I think it is important to remember that the department's research department, as a result, your colleagues tend not to like you so understand the practice topic, instead, they may want you to carry out the research.
